Home      605 Morehouse
605 Morehouse Rd, Easton CT

A colleague of mine asked me to make one of her listings the gem-of-the-week. I have to say I agreed to take a look because I was so intrigued by the listing. It didn’t seem like nearly enough money for what the house offered. I figured there was a catch…but there wasn’t!

Again, my absolute love affair with Easton remains alive and well. As I drove up Rte. 136 the beautiful Fall leaves framed the streets and I was once again transported to a movie set of a quaint New England town. I could swear I smelled the scent of apple pie baking as I drove through town. Just a stunning place.

As I drove up to 605 Morehouse Rd, I was struck by how majestically the house sits on its 3+ acres. It was beautifully framed by gorgeous, tall tress whose leaves are turning those rich autumnal colors. When I arrived the owner, who is British, greeted me in the side door entrance. I felt like I was immediately ensconced in a proper British home.  Solidly built, very warm and welcoming.  The “family living space” was immense, yet quaint all at the same time. It was comprised of a beautifully done kitchen, a cozy sitting area with a fireplace, a section with a table for games and another, larger conversation area. The whole room was anchored by a wall of windows that looked out into the horse paddock, but more on that in a bit.

At over 4,100 sq ft, this house has the unique ability to be large yet warmly enveloping all at the same time. Besides the “family space”, the downstairs is comprised of a very ample dining room, a very good sized living room and an office that could also easily convert to a bedroom. Since I didn’t come in through the front door, I didn’t immediately see the gracious entry foyer.

The upstairs offered even more space. There is a wonderful master suite that is larger than many NYC apartments, including its own washer and dryer. The other bedrooms are also very well-sized. The third floor of the house provided another pleasant surprise.  It was a huge au-pair/in-law/guest space with a proper sitting room, a good sized bedroom, huge closets, a bathroom and lots of built-ins. The perfect place to offer out-of-town guests. As a total Anglophile, I absolutely loved the furnishings and sumptuous window treatments throughout the house.

If that isn’t enough, the 3+ acres of property included a horse stable, a training yard and a paddock with plenty of space left for a lovely, spacious yard for any non-horse-lovers in residence. Plenty of space for everything.

The house is very conveniently located a few minutes from all the schools and at mid-afternoon, I clocked an 18 minute Fall foliage-laden ride back to the heart of Westport.

This house is listed for just $1,075,000 which seems rather low to me given what it offers and the quality of the construction and appointments. I am torn…is this house a gem because it so well constructed or because it is such a low price?

Why is this the Gem of the Week?

A lovely house at an even lovelier price.
